The short answer is win more than it costs you to play. The real answer is most players start small, entering local tournaments or playing online. Eventually you will work your way up to bigger tourneys with bigger pay outs.

You need to eat, sleep, and dream about poker. The main thing to do is you have to play a lot to become good. You can read all the books you want (and they are helpful) but you need to play a ton to become good at poker. You are probably best to start playing online as you see so many more hands online than you do in live poker. Start out small and work your up as you become better. This is not something that is going to happen overnight. It takes a lot of patience, discipline, and hard work. Check out some poker strategy articles here:

One can become a professional poker player by having an experience of more than five years of playing poker. Also, poker reviews and strategies like http://www.slotland.com/casino-articles/video-poker-explained.html help you understand poker rules better. The answer is simple... practice makes perfect!

look mate. you have different levels of professional. high stakes medium stakes and low stakes.

To be a professional all you have to do is earn enough money to make a living off it.
no you dont have to have played for 5 years. there isnt some sorta certificate u get after that long.
All it means is its how you make your living.
Im a student and i consider myself a low stake pro since iv earned more than what i did in3 years of work in a year of poker.

If you want to be pro. play loads. build skill and go to higher limits. mabey one day you might be lucky enough to reach the wsop..

There is a guide at http://casinolord.net/poker/8-becoming-a-poker-pro , however it is more geared to players that dream of being a sponsored pro and not for everybody that wants to be a poker pro in the sense that they make a living on playing poker online.
