Why do poker players continuously play with their chips?

The pro-players never seem to stop doing the so-called chip dance, or is there a reason?

Most poker players do it to keep their hands busy so not to give off any tells during play. If a player gets real nervous during play you will usually see his hand shake or twitch. to solve this some continously play with their chips to avoid it.

A poker player plays with his chips for 2 reasons, to not give away information, and to give false information. A player might play with their chips to keep their hands busy, so as not to give away that they are bluffing. Also, a player might play with them before it's their turn to act, so as to bluff players into thinking they are going to bet when it's their turn to act.

They do it to make opponents concentrate on your hands rather than any reads from the face or neck. Or they enjoy the sound of chips being moved around.

for me, and maybe I am speaking for others, I shuffle the chips when I am thoughtfully considering my next play.. I even do this in blackjack and pai gow so I know it doesn't necessarily pertain to traditional poker tables.

I liken it to someone tapping their pencil or fingers while thinking.. they are not even focused on the pencil or tapping, it is a reflex while they are thinking for the most part, and I believe this is why I do it. Plus it's something to do and not as annoying as tapping.

I can't speak for other people. I originally started doing it because it's somewhat fun. But now that it's become a habit, I do it because of a fairly strong urge, as if it's addictive. Sometimes my wrist hurts and I don't wanna chip-shuffle, but then when I'm not paying attention my hand grabs the chips and starts shuffling them again.

I think as because they really felt nervous and also another reason is that they don't let other player to see their hands. They also know how to handle the tricky situation without showing any sort of emotion on their face as they know any emotion can bring their downfall.

Have you ever heard of people who think more clearly when their hands are busy? That's pretty much the reason, it helps concentration and if you ever decide to go pro there's actually ALOT of thinking and thought processes that go on with almost every little thing that happens at the table.

This observation of yours is very important. I play with chips (most of the times) when I am either nervous or too excited. Although this helps me in giving false information to other players and bluff them to beat others to death.
