No, it has never been illegal. I understand why you are asking this, there is law that prohibits the banks to let people deposit into the gambling sites, but that involves only the banks, not the people. There is no law that is against online poker. But as you can guess you probably wont be able to deposit using your credit card, cause most of the banks decline transactions, you have to use other deposit method, also not all sites accept americans, you can check http://www.gamblingsafe.net/usa-friendly-sites/usa-poker-sites.html
for the best USA friendly poker sites. FUlltilt and pokerstars are the best ones, they are the best sites in the world. Also in the articles you can find what deposit methods to use.

There is the perception that it is illegal due to the UIGEA, which is a bogus law that was snuck into a port security act that had no chance of rejection. However, the UIGEA limits banks' transactions with poker sites and gambling sites. There is NOTHING the government or a bank can do to a player for playing at an offshore gambling site (but *maybe* decline transactions).

I've been playing online poker and used online sportsbooks for about 5 years now, and I'm from the US. You can find reviews of US friendly poker sites and sportsbooks at http://poker-lobby.com and http://dagus-statistics.com/reviews where you'll also find tips on how to securely deposit and withdraw. Hope this helps!

http://www.casinoscorner.com lists both US friendly and online poker rooms for other players like from AUS, UK, Canada.

As such there are no federal regulations which prohibit online poker in America and online gambling is legal in America but at the same time every state has the authority to legalize or forbid it.

(UIGEA) which make it inconvenient and "illegal" for the banks to conduct transactions with the online gambling companies. But there are payment processors (http://www.casinoscorner.com/neteller) which can be used to solve this issue.

The online casinos(servers) are not permitted to function from within America. Those who are American citizens, they can only play on non-American casinos.
All you need to do is to look for US friendly casinos.

As such online gambling is not illegal in US but every province has the authority to set its own rules for gambling. UIGEA has made it illegal for the banks to perform any transaction with the gambling firms, so other alternatives like EwalletXpress,UseMyWallet,Echeck,Click2Pay etc are there which US players can use.
All online casinos and poker rooms don’t welcome US players; there are few which you can check at http://www.casinosdiary.com/poker-rooms/
