In poker texas hold 'em, why would you fold when you have the option of checking?

isn't it always better to check since you're not putting in extra money and you can see how things turn out the next round when another community card is revealed?

There is no real reason. I suppose if I'm in the big blind with 3-7, and the flop comes out Q-K-J, I might just fold if I have to go to the bathroom or something. The last thing I'd want is to have it checked around, have a 7 come on the turn, then someone bets small... I'd should probably fold anyway at that point, so it keeps me out of trouble.

The only reason I can think of is if one has such a woeful hand you know there's no possibility of significant improvement (which means you're at least postflop) and you know at least one person still in the hand never backs down to aggression, so there's no hope of bluffing.

If you know that you don't have a hope in hell in winning the hand some people just fold to speed things up.
