During a recent hand I had a pair of 8's, 9, Ace and King of hearts ?

The other hand had no pairs - but a 6, 9, King and Ace all of same suite and 5 of another suite. They said their hand was higher than mine. I am a novice at this but thought a pair beats a no pair hand. Is this true? Thanks.
